WHEN FACING THE THINGS WE TURN AWAY FROM

The debut solo album ‘When Facing the Things We Turn Away From’ by Luke Hemmings, released in August 2021, sought to untangle the decade-long, winding phenomenon that is coming-of-age in an incredibly public-facing band. This deeply introspective project is comprised of 12 songs inspired by artists such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Bon Iver, and Pink Floyd. In response to these songs, I created individual, conceptual single art from my original photography that fuses seamlessly with the original album art (pictured on the left) and serves as an extension of the pre-existing visual world surrounding the music. The moody, ethereal nature of the album is reflected through the use of bold colors, harsh shadows, subtly gritty textures, smoky overlays, and hazy typography.
This project was created in 2021 as an academic study in Digital Photography at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
