MURALS

All murals have been created through the ArtWorks Mural Studio Program, the ArtWorks Youth Apprenticeship Program, and the StreetSpark Program. Click below to learn more!

  • Studio Artists are young adults (ages 18-24) who are eager to launch their careers as creative professionals - a step up from seasonal employment as an ArtWorks Apprentice. Mural Studio Artist Employment includes a structured mural production and project management curriculum covering all aspects from initial communication to project completion. Curriculum models include, but are not limited to:

    • Introduction to Mural Making: Learn and apply the basics of painting and mural thinking, including color mixing, filtering, and brush cleaning.

    • Mural Making: Learn different brush strokes, recognizing layers, and planning a mural.

    • Design: Learn and apply what makes a great mural design, and how color creates depth, movement, and hierarchy.

    • Back End of Mural Making: Learn how to organize artistic projects, understand budgets, client communications, and lead a project with best practices.

  • ArtWorks Apprentices (ages 14-21) work side-by-side with Teaching Artists to create public art and community impact projects on a seasonal basis. Projects are most often large-scale outdoor murals, but ArtWorks has also produced photography, sewing, dance, and film-making projects. Beyond art making, our creative career development training and team experiences prepare Apprentices to elevate their skills in collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking, goal orientation, and growth orientation. Through this job, Apprentices develop lifelong friendships and bonds with their teammates and connect with their communities through a collaborative. creative process.

  • StreetSpark, a public art program in partnership with the Fitton Center for Creative Arts, the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Community Foundation, was founded to further the creative identity in Hamilton, Ohio through exciting murals and public art projects. The program creates engagement by producing high quality art, providing opportunities for local artists and enhancing the visual appeal of the city. Since the summer of 2016, 20 murals and 17 utility boxes have been painted in a variety of styles. Each year artists are invited to submit a range of designs, and the winning murals are chosen by a selection committee of local arts professionals and appreciators.
